Job Description: * Duties and Responsibilities:
  • BASIC FUNCTIONS:
- The accurate and timely provision of Sterile Services procedures and processes, to ensureall equipment / packs are provided in a safe condition for use on patients.- To provide a distribution service to all wards and departments - correct - timely -economical.
  • SCOPE:
  • Provides professional sterilization services to Hospital
  • Work is performed on any shift, as required in the CSSD department of Hospital
  • Hours are as assigned and may include on call.
  • PRINCIPLE DUTIES:
ZONE I - Receiving and WashingIncludes:
  • Collection of used equipment from users
  • Checking instrument / sets on return from users to ensure all items are present and in a good condition.
  • Reporting any item missing immediately to the supervisor and user.
  • Recording any incident of missing equipment or complaint into department diary.
  • Ensuring equipment stays together for traceability process
  • Identify equipment which can not go through the machinery and ensure it is traceable through other processes
  • Hand washing of delicate or difficult to clean equipment
  • Use of appropriate cleaning brushes and chemicals
  • Restocking chemicals to the machines and working areas
  • Cleaning of tables and machinery - loaders & carriages etc
  • Use of computer tracking system for equipment.
  • Use of all machinery for the cleaning of equipment.
  • Use of air & water guns in the cleaning of equipment.
  • Removal of clinical waste / used - returned linen - to collection area
  • Communicating faults in area of machinery and structure to status board and informing the estates help desk
  • Requesting replenishment stocks - chemicals - gloves - etc
  • Replace chemicals to machines
  • Decant residual chemical into same batch container for use in machines
ZONE II - ASSEMBLY & PACKINGIncludes:
  • Processing of equipment through clean room procedures
  • Inspecting equipment for cleanliness - workable -damage or deterioration of materials
  • Request replacement item when needed
  • Process equipment into the correct set (traceability)
  • Wrapping and labelling of equipment using the appropriate packing method
  • Handling trolleys to transport & transfer equipment
  • Production of consumables items
  • Recording all faults with instruments in regard to traceability
  • Wrapping of gowns & linen packs
  • Use of all machinery
  • Cleaning of transfer trolleys and carriages to ensure they are clean and free from dust etc
  • Carry out routine tests on heat seal machinery to ensure safe seal
  • Checking of sets processed by others when requested to do so
  • Cleaning down work surfaces before leaving department
  • Use of computer system
  • Replacing printer rolls etc to washer - disinfectors
  • Checking of washer print outs to cycle number on computer plus temperatures and times. Return to office daily.
  • Request consumables for the clean room
  • Ensure all work is carried out correctly and in a timely manner.
ZONE III - STERILIZER AREAIncludes
  • Carry out daily tests on the sterilisers at start of machines use
  • Use of computer system for traceability
  • Use of appropriate trolleys & carriages
  • Segregation of sterilised equipment into correct containers or shelves for distribution
  • Communicate faulty equipment to estates department help desk and onto status board
  • Completion of decontamination certificates when required
  • Lot numbering each item sterilised
  • Cleaning door seal of sterilisers each day
  • Keep machinery / trolleys / carriages clean and free from labels / dust etc
  • Distribute on a regular basis to theatres using correct trolley
  • Distribution of products to other area's using appropriate trolley
  • Transfer of materials from main bulk store to sub-bulk store in the department
  • Request clerical items from the office
  • Keep paper topped up in the printers
ZONE IV - STERILE STORES AREAIncludes
  • Materials Management system of ward / department distribution of products
  • Ensure lists are followed with correct code numbers for products and exact quantities are maintained in Materials Management trolley
  • Ensure correct product is situated in correct area of trolley
  • Rotate materials to ensure that they do not go out of date
  • Report to Materials & Systems manager any problems with the trolleys or contents
  • Stock taking twice a year of complete stock of materials / packs etc
  • Keeping the area tidy and products in correct places
  • Use of all computer systems
  • Audit use of materials in house and at user level
  • Review with the user the relevant use of stock holding
  • Inform Materials & Systems manager of any changes requested- provision of correct change form from users
  • Checking into main stores area of orders as they arrive
  • Signing delivery notes - with appropriate comments as to condition / shortfall of item
6.4 OTHER DUTIES:
  • Follow all department policies and procedures
  • Participation in the On Call system once proficient
  • Participation in the Major Incident Call Out System - immediately
  • Participation in any training relevant to the department
  • To undertake training in TVQ levels and any up date to this.
  • Follow all Quality Control / processes / techniques / Procedures
  • Maintain a tidy and clean department
  • Practice and encourage good communication
  • Maintain good relations within the department and other departments
  • Adhere to all Health & Safety Procedures
  • Report verbally and by complete accident forms when necessary
  • Follow Clinical Governance for the department
  • Fill out appropriate incident forms
  • Adhere to all allotted times for breaks
  • Attend department meetings and be a participant
  • Follow Rota's : On Call / Bank Holiday work periods / Late weeks
  • Assist new starters to settle into the department
  • Additional over time within the week as required and able to do so.
  • Week end over time as stated on rota
  • Answer telephones and door bells and assist caller
  • Follow Infection Control Instructions for within the department and throughout the hospital
  • Keep all shoes provided in a clean state
