Job Description:Supervises and coordinates the day to day activities of the Orthopedic Department. Participates in the planning and implementation of integrated preventive-curative medical care programs for the unit. Performs the professional duties of an orthopedic surgeon.Responsibilities:3.1 Responsible to develop and implement policies/ procedures/ plans/ SOPs/clinical guidelines/pathways of the
department
3.2 Responsible for implementing a unit specific quality improvement and patient safety program/initiative
3.3 Responsible for identification, selection and monitoring of measures specific to the department or service,
assess data, plan change, and sustain improvements in quality and patient safety
3.4 Responsible to ensure complete and timely training and education of staff on quality improvement process such
as but not limited to, prevention and control of infection, emergency disaster response, fire safety, Hazmat, spill
management, etc.
3.5 Responsible for monitoring and coordination of the quality improvement and patient safety program and
initiatives
3.6 Responsible for monitoring incidents and sentinel events, and taken action and to sustain, to improve safety in
response to events
3.7 Responsible to support culture of safety program and implement, monitor, and take action to improve the
program in the department
3.8 Responsible for carrying out the evaluation/performance appraisal for the staffs in their department
3.9 Performs all management functions common to the Group level as established by management.3.10 Responsible for the orthopedic Department which provide surgical care, including diagnosis, pre-operative care,
all major and minor operative procedures in the field of orthopedic surgery and post-surgery care.
3.11 A major portion of the incumbent's work will be the professional care of assigned patients and providing
consultation on complex cases.
3.12 Incumbent is directly responsible for monitoring the professional care provided by the
3.13 Department and for consultations and other medical problems relating to the Group.
3.14 This includes recommending the initiation of Departmental study of difficult cases, cases requiring the services
of other specialists and review of post-operative and special care cases.
3.15 Monitors the professional aspects of the Department to ensure that established standards of DOH & JCI are
met.
3.16 Incumbent keeps generally informed of the surgical and related services rendered and observes the
enforcement of hospital regulations through scheduled ward rounds and periodic inspection tours, occasional
spot checks of clinical records, and regularly scheduled conferences.
3.17 Provides day to day direction and professional guidance to the members of the group. These may include
locums.
3.18 Supervises the day to day orthopedic surgical activities to ensure the established medical, ethical and legal
procedures are followed.
3.19 Plans and maintains daily work schedules necessary for required performance of all Department functions,
including leaves of absence, vacations, holiday and weekend schedules, and emergency on-call schedules after
working hours.
3.20 Monitors the care of all patients receiving surgical treatment provided by the orthopedic Department to assure
standards are met.
3.21 Conducts daily rounds and participates in grand rounds.
3.22 Keeps informed as to current developments in the field of orthopedic surgery and keeps the surgical staff up to
date on surgical process through Department discussions, lectures and in- service training.
3.23 Coordinates with other divisional personnel in planning programs integrating the curative and preventive
aspects of total patient care.
3.24 Is responsible for the implementation of approved curative-preventive programs as they relate to the
Orthopedic Department functions3.25 Recommends new surgical and related services procedures proper to undertake and/or new techniques to be
utilized. Initiates actions to assure availability of special equipment and supplies within established guidelines.
3.26 Provides for training of the Department personnel by on the job instruction, demonstrating personally work
necessary to train, and recommending in-service programs or other developmental activities as required.
3.27 Participates in the development and maintenance of professional quality standards and makes
recommendations for improvement of such standards.
3.28 Directs the Department personnel functions including orientation of new employees; application of company
personnel policies in conduct of employees, safety, and other personnel related activities; handling grievances;
administering warning and disciplinary actions where necessary in conformance with Medical Services policy.
3.29 Maintains effective communications with assigned personnel, other supervisors in the Division, and with the
MD, informing personnel of pertinent policies, rules, and instructions and keeping the MD informed of problems
encountered. Recommends changes in established policy, rules or regulations where pertinent.
3.30 Develops and maintains cost standards for the Department through guidance from the MD and in coordination
with other Division Supervisors, by checking and eliminating excessive use of labor, materials and services.
3.31 Utilizes and monitors to assure Department personnel use supporting services (Nursing, Pathology, Radiology)
in a timely, efficient and cost-effective manner.
3.32 Plans and maintains daily work schedules necessary for required performance of all Department functions,
including leaves of absence, vacations, holiday and weekend schedules, and emergency on-call schedules after
working hours.
3.33 Assists in the development of improved methods and job simplification, by participating in special studies
concerning development or revision of existing procedures, policies and practices.
3.34 Participates on committees as assigned.
3.35 Initiates direct charge orders needed for the running of the operating room and surgical procedures. These
direct charge orders require the signature of MD.
3.36 Monitors clinical and other established indicators to ensure ongoing quality assurance.
3.37 Strictly observes organization's medical regulations and policies especially those related to infection control,
patient safety, patient assessment and patient care.
3.38 Performs other miscellaneous related duties as requested by the Medical management.
3.39 Comply with all OSH (Occupational safety and health) and infection control policies, standards and procedures
and cooperate with hospital management to comply those requirements3.40 Work accordance with the documented OSH procedures and instructions, specific responsibilities
3.41 Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures
3.42 Notifying OSH Hazards, incidents, Near misses and issues and assistance with the preparation of risk
assessments, incident reports
3.43 Comply with Waste management procedures and policies
3.44 Attend applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills and awareness programs
3.45 Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems
3.46 Ensure as far as reasonably practicable that any workplaces they manage or control are safe and without risks
to health, safety or the environment.
3.47 Ensure implementation of applicable DOH, NMCRH OSHMS and infection control policies and standards
3.48 Designating a Safety facilitator who will be responsible for coordinating OSH activities within the department.
3.49 Regularly discuss OSH issues or matters in departmental/ management meetings
3.50 Ensure provision of OSH information, training and Supervision
3.51 Implement and monitor effectiveness of risk management programQualifications:4.1 Graduation from an approved medical school plus internship
4.2 Three years residency in orthopedic culminating in procuring a Post-Graduate Master's degree and/or
equivalent Fellowships approved by DOH.
4.3 Five or more year's exclusive practice of Orthopedic since certification.
4.4 Must have DOH License to practice.
4.5 Comprehensive knowledge of medical services policies and procedures, U.A.E. law and regulations, company
policies and procedures.
4.6 English is required to prepare documentation and it is used as the common language to communicate with
different nationalities. Basic knowledge of medical Arabic desirable.
4.7 Must have a thorough knowledge of medical ethics
