- The Chief Officer is responsible for the overall management of deck operations and acts as second-in-command to the Master onboard the TSHD.
- Plan, supervise, and execute dredging operations including loading, overflow control, sailing, and discharge activities.
- Ensure safe and efficient operation of dredging equipment such as dragheads, suction pipes, hopper systems, and discharge arrangements.
- Monitor dredging parameters (density, production rate, overflow limits) to optimize performance and meet project targets.
- Oversee stability, trim, and stress of the vessel during all phases of dredging and ensure compliance with stability criteria.
- Maintain strict adherence to environmental regulations, including turbidity control and designated dumping areas.
- Supervise deck crew, assign duties, and ensure high standards of seamanship and operational discipline.
- Ensure proper maintenance, inspection, and certification of deck machinery, lifting gear, wires, anchors, and safety equipment.
- Coordinate closely with the Master, Chief Engineer, and Dredge Master (if applicable) for safe and efficient vessel operations.
- Implement and enforce company Safety Management System (SMS), permit-to-work system, and risk assessments onboard.
- Conduct safety meetings, toolbox talks, and emergency drills (fire, collision, man overboard, abandon ship).
- Maintain accurate records of dredging operations, deck maintenance, inspections, and statutory documentation.
- Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations such as International Maritime Organization conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW).
- Manage deck stores, spares, and consumables, ensuring adequate inventory levels for continuous operations.
- Report operational performance, incidents, defects, and improvement suggestions to the Master and shore management.
